Classic Endurance Racing in the summit!

What is more logical than to achieve, on one of the most appreciated circuit, an incredible starting grid? Actually, it is a fact, the circuit of Spa-Francorchamps instigates excitement and for its 2nd race of the season, Classic Endurance Racing has put together no less than 55 racing legends.

After his success in Barcelona, Jean-Marc Luco (Porsche 936) recurred his performance and climbed on the highest step of the podium flanked by Jacques Nicolet (2nd on March 74S) and Olivier Cazalières( 3rd on Lola T298).

As an opened history book, this sixth season of Classic Endurance Racing is the perfect mirror of what World Endurance Championship was at the time!

Focus on Yvan Mahé's Porsche 935 “Moby Dick".

After having easily win the World Championship in 1976 and 1977 with its new Porsche 935, the German factory gives up aligning a third time an official team in 1978. Wishing however to fight with prototypes, Porsche decided to present two months before the beginning of the season, a brand new 935 lowered, widened and endowed with a new flat - six 3 211 cc biturbo developing 750 cv! With the nickname of "Moby Dick", the beast only preserves the central cell of the 935 but doesn’t have anything else in common with it. For its first race the car will honour its reputation with a victory in Silverstone and by realizing the third time during the 24 Hours of Le Mans the same year with Stommelen and Schurti.
With a top speed of more than 360 kph on the Hunaudières, she will outperform three prototypes on the grid (Alpine Renault and two Porsche 936). Forced to numerous pit stops due to an amazing consumption (approximately 100 liters an hour) she will pass through the checkered flag in the honourable 8th place. For info, it is with the Kremer brothers racing team (Kremer Racing) that a 935 will win in Sarthe one year later.

The Porsche 935 “Moby Dick” of Yvan Mahé is one of the 4 chassis ever built called “JR 01” for “Joest Racing” which participated in the German Championship with Jochen Mass. Until 1984, she was also enrolled in the World Endurance Championship and in IMSA in United States.
